G DATA Cyber Defense Status Check shows the state of IT security in businesses

German cyber defence specialist G DATA is expanding its range. G DATA is offering security assessments especially for small and medium-sized companies. This enables IT managers to make targeted investments in effective IT security.

Companies need to take a more holistic approach to IT security. This includes checking the current status of their IT and IT processes from a security perspective. Many companies use a comprehensive penetration test to deal with this problem. However, this service is not affordable for many smaller companies. In addition, correct interpretation of the results requires a high level of maturity in terms of IT security within the company, and that requires highly qualified IT security experts. Under its new offer, German cyber defence specialist G DATA provides even SMEs with recommendations for action that are easy to implement.

Andreas Lüning

Time and again we see that corporate networks have grown very organically, especially in small and medium-sized companies. The complexity then increases, but the security usually does not grow with it. Our experience shows that there is often a big difference between ‘guessing what you have’ and ‘knowing what you have'.

G DATA's Cyber Defense Status Checks give companies an initial realistic impression of the IT security of their network as well as specific indications of where action is needed. With the Level 1 test, G DATA security experts automatically check for potential gaps in the defence and test the existing infrastructure using an external vulnerability scan. Even this security assessment usually provides a clear picture of the network and the potential weaknesses - with both little effort and low costs. The companies receive a detailed evaluation and suggestions for improving IT security in a targeted manner.

For SMEs in particular, safeguarding against avoidable vulnerabilities is an important issue. Not all attacks on corporate networks are targeted and carried out with a high degree of criminal effort. SMEs especially can easily become victims of global attacks such as WannaCry or NotPetya. You can protect yourself against them with comparatively little effort.

Deeper security check

On top of this, Cyber Defense Status Check Level 2 is now available. In addition to the automated vulnerability scan, G DATA security experts have a meeting with the IT manager that lasts approximately one hour. The analysts use a questionnaire to assess the status of key IT areas such as authentication, proactive security measures or dealing with virus discoveries. The questions can only be answered with a Yes or No, so that the G DATA experts can give recommendations on improving IT security during the meeting itself.

Typical errors endanger corporate security

The security experts at G DATA repeatedly come across typical errors. One example is outdated versions of the SSL or TLS encryption standards. These offer attackers an invasion vector and a simple way of tapping into, decrypting and reading any and all communication. In many cases, the internal or external Certificate Authority (CA) may not be trustworthy. In order to avoid critical data loss when using an external CA, the G DATA security experts recommend checking out the provider immediately and changing it if necessary. They also find insecure Secure Shell services or an activated Remote Desktop protocol more often than they would like.
